Table & Chairs

A Project of Table & Chairs in Seattle, WA

Racer Session #406 | Jim Knapp's Scrape Ensemble | January 21, 2018

Greetings, Racers!

This Sunday at 8pm, Jim Knapp and Scrape will present for the third of four Racer Sessions at Vermillion in Capitol Hill. We are very excited to have them! Jim is a pillar of the Seattle jazz community, all-encompassing as a performer, composer, and educator (newly retired, might I add!). Scrape challenges the often thick line drawn between the realms of Classical and Jazz music, and features some of Seattle's strongest players. Read below for some words from Jim himself, and make sure to get yourself to Vermillion this weekend for his set! Jam session, as always, will follow.

"Scrape is a string orchestra that functions somewhat like a jazz group. There are improvised solos and ensembles and the compositions are unique to this group (as opposed to repertory). There is no conductor and rehearsals involve a lot of discussion. Scrape began as a conversation between violinist Eyvind Kang and myself. When it was time to put together the idea, Eyvind connected me with Brianna Atwell who provided valuable assistance in assembling the players. A few years later, and here we are.

Thank you to Table and Chairs for inviting us to play. This version of Scrape is a smaller version to accommodate the size of the room.
