Racer Session #428 | Wayne Horvitz | June 24, 2018

Greetings, Racers!

This Sunday, we are thrilled to be presenting a dear friend and hero, Wayne Horvitz, for our last session of June. Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist and electronic musician; leader of bands such as Sweeter Than the Day, RRCME, Zony Mash; co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra; collaborator of Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley, among others. Additionally, Wayne is a strong and supportive pillar of the Seattle community as an educator in composition, and a part-owner of the Royal Room in Columbia City, a venue that gives space to huge swaths of the community's performers, near and far.

This is not a session to miss - it will be Wayne's first presentation at Racer since 2011. We are so stoked to be there and here what happens. So make sure to get out to the session this Sunday at 8pm, jam session to follow. Read on to catch some words from Wayne!

"Finding time to play with all the musicians I meet, and have come to know, here in Seattle, and elsewhere, is a constant struggle. A joy when I get the chance -  and a problem to find the time, the place, and the context.

Improvising without a pre-existing structure is something I always want to do more of, and its odd that I don’t, since for many years it was the meat and potatoes of my musical existence. I think its easy to get wrapped up in projects - bands, recording projects, composing - and forget to pay attention to what might be missing! So its with great pleasure that I get the chance to play with two inspirational musicians here at home, at Cafe Racer: a trio with Ivan Arteaga on saxophone and Evan Woodle on drums.

I will be playing some assortment of keyboards and electronics. We will see what happens.

Hope to see you there."
